Andrew W. was the tech who came to my house. He was very pleasant, on time, and I feel the price for the work was fair. When I had price questions, Andrew walked me through exactly what he was going to do and what I was paying for. No surprises — everything was crystal clear.
Why Central Virginia homeowners choose The Otter Guys
65+ years replacing AC components in Central Virginia
Since 1960, we’ve replaced every capacitor, contactor, compressor, fan motor, and control board Goodman, Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, and American Standard have ever built. Whatever’s failed on your system, we’ve diagnosed it before — and we stock or source the right part fast.
Same-day diagnostic — $50 off any repair
We come out today, verify which component actually failed, and give you a written estimate before any parts go in. The diagnostic fee comes off the repair bill. No “you also need” surprises, no replacement-system pitch when a repair will do.
Thorough diagnostics — root cause, not just the symptom
We don’t just chase the symptom that triggered the call. Our technicians walk the entire system — refrigerant charge, electrical, airflow, controls, and the suspected component — so we find the actual root cause. That’s how we keep callbacks low and avoid the recurring issues that come from incomplete diagnoses. If a part is bad, we replace it. If your system is 10+ years old and out of warranty, we’ll show you honest repair-vs-replace numbers in writing and let you decide.

Common AC components we diagnose and replace
Run Capacitor
The #1 AC failure in Central VA. Hum then nothing = weak cap. A trained tech confirms the failure on-site with proper equipment and replaces it in the same visit.
Contactor
The electrical switch powering the outdoor unit. Pitted contacts cause intermittent starts or a buzzing condenser. Clean same-day replacement.
Condenser Fan Motor
The fan on top of the outdoor unit. Not spinning = system overheats, freezes, or shuts off. We test motor, cap, and bearings together.
Blower Motor
The indoor fan that moves conditioned air. A failing blower burns caps, trips breakers, or quits. ECM and PSC motors both stocked or sourced fast.
Compressor
The big one. Before anyone recommends replacement, we verify with amp draw and start-up tests. Many “dead compressor” calls are actually a capacitor or contactor.
Refrigerant / Coil
Low refrigerant always = a leak. We find it with electronic + UV dye, repair where possible, and recharge R-410A or R-22 with transparent pricing.

Here’s exactly what happens when you call
Same-day component diagnostic
A licensed technician comes out, tests the suspected component (capacitor, contactor, compressor, fan motor), and confirms what’s actually failed. Many “bad compressor” calls turn out to be a $20 capacitor — we’d rather find that than sell you a repair you don’t need.
Your options and pricing in writing
Before any parts go in, you get a written estimate. For most components there’s 1–2 options (OEM vs. equivalent). We walk through your options.
The repair
Once you approve, we replace the part, test the system under load, verify temperature split, and take the $50 off your final bill. Most component repairs finish the same visit.
Component failed? Get a real diagnosis and $50 off any repair.
A weak capacitor, pitted contactor, or failing fan motor puts every run on the compressor. Left alone they shorten compressor life — a far more expensive failure. We’ll test the part, confirm the actual failure, and replace what’s broken — not upsell you to a new system.
Frequently asked questions
Capacitor $300–$450. Contactor $300–$450. Condenser fan motor $900–$2,400 (ECM runs higher than PSC). Blower motor $800–$2,400 (ECM higher end, PSC lower) (ECM runs higher than PSC). Refrigerant leak repair + R-410A recharge: $400–$900. Compressor replacement: $1,800–$3,500. Evaporator coil replacement runs $1,500–$3,000 depending on system. Our diagnostic confirms exactly which component failed before we quote — so you see the real number in writing, not a range. $50 off any repair after the diagnostic.
We lead with repair when a repair is the right call. But we’re not anti-replacement — if you’ve got a 10+ year old system with a $2,000+ repair on the table, or compressor failure on an aging R-22 system, replacement often makes more sense and we’ll say so. Our job is to diagnose thoroughly, show you every finding in writing, lay out your repair-and-replace options side by side, and let you pick what fits your home and budget.
Capacitors are cheap online and it’s tempting. Two things to know: (1) the outdoor unit is live 240V and capacitors store charge even when power’s off — accidents here are serious. (2) If the capacitor died, something caused it (bad fan motor bearings, a contactor sticking, a refrigerant issue pushing the compressor hard) — if you replace the cap and miss the cause, you’re buying another one in weeks. Our diagnostic finds the root cause, and the $50 off covers most of the price difference on the part.
Often yes — for urgent no-cool calls we dispatch same-day when we can, especially for homes with elderly residents, young children, or anyone with a medical need. Call our dispatcher and tell them what’s going on; they’ll give you the earliest realistic slot and move genuine safety calls up the board.
Yes. 5–15 year financing with competitive rates, approved in about 2 minutes. For larger repairs (compressor, coil, multi-component) this keeps your out-of-pocket manageable. Your technician walks through options during the visit.
Whatever component has given up on your AC, we’ve replaced it before. Over 65 years, we’ve fixed thousands of capacitors, contactors, motors, and coils across Central Virginia — and kept as many systems running past their “replace it” decade as we’ve replaced. You don’t have to figure out which part failed, and you don’t have to sweat it out.
