Andrew W. was the tech who came to my house. He was very pleasant, on time, and I feel the price for the work was fair. When I had price questions, Andrew walked me through exactly what he was going to do and what I was paying for. No surprises — everything was crystal clear.
Why Central Virginia homeowners choose The Otter Guys
65+ years of Central Virginia winters
Since 1960, we’ve dealt with every winter Central VA throws at heat pumps. We know the difference between normal defrost frost and a real problem — and we’ve fixed thousands of defrost-cycle failures across every brand and vintage.
Same-day diagnostic — $50 off any repair
We come out today, force a defrost cycle to watch what’s actually happening, test the defrost board, sensor, and reversing valve, and give you a written estimate before any parts go in. Diagnostic fee comes off the bill.
Thorough diagnostics — root cause, not just the symptom
Ice on a heat pump is rarely just “the unit is bad.” We walk the entire defrost cycle — sensors, defrost board, reversing valve, refrigerant charge, drainage — to find the actual root cause. That’s how we keep callbacks low and avoid the recurring freeze-ups that come from incomplete diagnoses. If a part is bad, we replace it. On older systems we’ll show you honest repair-vs-replace numbers in writing and let you decide.

What kind of ice means trouble — and what doesn’t
Light Frost (Normal)
A thin layer of frost on the coil after running — especially around 30–40°F — is normal. Defrost cycle clears it every 30–90 minutes. Nothing to fix.
Solid Ice on Coil (Problem)
Coil completely encased in ice that doesn’t clear, or ice 1–2″ thick = failed defrost cycle. Defrost board, sensor, or stuck reversing valve. Same-day fix on most cases.
Fan Blade Frozen Solid
Outdoor fan can’t spin because it’s iced in. DON’T pour hot water (cracks the fan). Turn the unit off at the breaker, call us — we’ll thaw safely and find the cause.
Stuck in Defrost
Steam coming off the unit constantly, indoor temperature dropping — defrost board not exiting cycle. Costs you in aux heat. Quick board or sensor swap fixes most cases.
Snow / Ice Buildup at Base
Heat pump sitting in a tub of frozen meltwater can’t drain — ice creeps up the coil. Drain pan heater failed, or unit needs to be raised. Easy fix; prevents bigger damage.
Reversing Valve Stuck
Defrost cycle works by reversing the valve to send hot refrigerant outside. Stuck valve = no defrost = ice buildup. Often a solenoid swap, sometimes a valve replacement.

Here’s exactly what happens when you call
Same-day defrost diagnostic
A licensed technician comes out, safely thaws the unit if needed, then runs a forced defrost cycle to watch what’s happening. Tests defrost board, defrost sensor, reversing valve solenoid, refrigerant pressures, drain pan heater, and outdoor fan motor. We find the actual cause — not just clear the ice.
Your options and pricing in writing
Before any work begins, you get a written estimate. Most defrost issues are a board, sensor, or solenoid — usually 1–2 repair paths. If your system is past 12 years and the repair is significant, we’ll show you all your options — comfort and budget — and let you decide.
The repair
Once you approve, we make the repair, force a full defrost cycle to verify operation, run heat / cool / aux mode tests, and take the $50 off your final bill. Most defrost repairs finish the same visit.

Ignoring a defrost problem is the fastest way to a dead compressor. Ice on the coil restricts airflow, drives suction pressure low, and forces the compressor to run cold and slug liquid refrigerant. We’ll find the actual cause, fix what’s broken, and not upsell you to a new system.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — a thin layer of frost on the coil is normal in winter. The defrost cycle clears it every 30–90 minutes. It’s a problem when: the coil is encased in solid ice, ice is 1–2″ thick, the fan blade is frozen solid, the unit is sitting in a tub of frozen meltwater, or the unit runs constantly with steam coming off but never returns to heat mode. Any of those = call us.
No. Hot water can crack the fan blade or coil fins (rapid temperature change), and you’ll be back to a frozen unit in hours because the underlying defrost problem isn’t fixed. Turn the unit OFF at the breaker (not just the thermostat), let it thaw naturally, and call us. We’ll thaw the rest safely and find the cause — usually a $300–$700 fix.
Defrost sensor: $250–$400. Defrost board: $400–$700. Reversing valve solenoid: $350–$600. Drain pan heater: $200–$400. Outdoor fan motor + capacitor: $500–$900. Reversing valve replacement: $1,200–$2,200. Refrigerant leak repair + recharge: $400–$1,200. Our diagnostic confirms exactly what failed before we quote — you see the real number in writing. $50 off any repair after the diagnostic.
Almost never — not for a defrost problem alone. The defrost system (board, sensor, reversing valve) is replaceable on every brand. The only time we’d walk you through replacement numbers is if the compressor has also failed, the system is past 15 years on R-22 refrigerant, or repair cost approaches half a new system. Even then, we’ll give you all your options in writing and let you pick what works for your comfort and budget.
Often yes — for urgent no-heat calls we dispatch same-day when we can, especially for homes with elderly residents, young children, or anyone with a medical need. Call our dispatcher and tell them what’s going on; they’ll give you the earliest realistic slot and move genuine safety calls up the board.
If your heat pump is iced over, we’ve seen it — thousands of times. Over 65 years and every Central Virginia cold snap, we’ve thawed, diagnosed, and fixed every defrost problem there is. You don’t have to figure out whether it’s normal frost or a real problem — we’ll tell you straight, and fix what needs fixing.
