Bought a Nest from Best Buy thinking I’d save money installing it myself. Three trips to find missing C-wire, then it kept rebooting and wouldn’t hold a schedule. Otter Guys ran a new C-wire from the air handler, configured it correctly, and showed me how the schedule and away modes actually work. Done in an hour. Should’ve called them first.
Why Charlottesville homeowners call us for thermostat work
We diagnose first — thermostat or system?
Half the “thermostat” calls we get aren’t the thermostat. Bad transformer, low-voltage short, blown control board fuse, missing C-wire. We test before we sell you a new thermostat — saves you from buying hardware that won’t fix the problem.
Smart thermostats done right
Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell T-series, Sensi, Emerson — we install them, run C-wires when needed, configure heat pump vs. dual-fuel logic, set up wifi and schedules. We don’t leave until you understand how to use yours.
Your neighbors, not a national chain
Family-owned in Charlottesville since 1960. The dispatcher answering your call lives here. Most of our techs grew up here. We’re not chasing a quarterly sales target — we’re here next year, and the year after.

Common thermostat problems we fix
Blank Screen
Display dead, won’t respond to buttons. Could be batteries, blown control board fuse, missing C-wire, transformer. We test all four.
Won’t Hold a Schedule
Programmed schedule keeps resetting, away mode doesn’t kick in, eco mode randomly disables. Usually configuration, sometimes failed thermostat memory.
Won’t Connect to Wifi
Nest, Ecobee, Sensi keeps dropping wifi or won’t pair on first install. Router setup, 2.4GHz vs 5GHz, app account issues — we work through it.
Controlling Wrong Zone
Upstairs thermostat running downstairs system, or both running together. Wiring at the air handler is mis-labeled or zone board is bad. Fixable.
Reading Wrong Temperature
Thermostat says 68°F, room is actually 75°F. Sensor failure, bad placement (sun, draft, near a vent), or calibration drift. We move it or replace it.
Missing C-Wire for Smart Thermostat
Bought a Nest or Ecobee, found out you need a C-wire and your old wiring doesn’t have one. We run a new C-wire from the air handler and get the smart thermostat working right.
What Charlottesville homeowners say
Andrew W. was the tech who came to my house. He was very pleasant, on time, and I feel the price for the work was fair. When I had price questions, Andrew walked me through exactly what he was going to do and what I was paying for. No surprises — everything was crystal clear.B. Costello
Devin did a thorough job evaluating our system to ensure it was operating properly. He went above and beyond what we expected. Great service — we will definitely use Otter Guys in the future!Jamie R.
Michael was fantastic — taking the time to thoroughly assess my HVAC system and follow up on other home issues from his previous visit. Great service and staff. I will continue to use The Otter Guys in the future!AJ M.
How a thermostat service visit works
Diagnose — thermostat or system?
Tech tests low-voltage power at the thermostat (24V), checks for missing C-wire, tests transformer at the air handler, reads any error codes. Tells you whether it’s the thermostat, the wiring, or the system.
Written estimate, all your options
Repair existing thermostat, swap to a basic non-smart unit, install a Nest/Ecobee/Honeywell smart thermostat, or fix underlying system wiring — we lay out the options in writing with real prices. You pick.
Install & teach you how it works
Most thermostat work is done in one visit. We don’t leave until your schedule is set, wifi is connected, the app is installed, and you understand how it works. $50 off any repair after diagnostic.
Thermostat issues are usually a 1-visit fix — let’s get it right.
A failed thermostat in heating season can turn off your heat overnight. A bad install on a smart thermostat can short the control board and cost you a $700 repair. A missing C-wire can cause your Nest to reboot every 20 minutes for years. We’ll diagnose the actual issue, give you all your options in writing, and take $50 off the repair.
Frequently asked questions
Same-day for most thermostat calls if you call by mid-morning. Charlottesville and Albemarle calls go on our local routes first. Thermostat work is usually quick — we can often slot it between larger jobs. Call early for the best odds.
Most thermostat work runs $250–$650. Diagnostic and minor repair (loose wire, configuration, battery): $250–$400. Basic non-smart thermostat replacement: $300–$500. Smart thermostat install (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell): $400–$650 including the unit. Add $200–$400 if we need to run a new C-wire from the air handler. Diagnostic fee applies; $50 off any repair after diagnostic.
Yes. We install homeowner-supplied thermostats — flat install rate, plus any C-wire run if needed. We’ll also tell you honestly if your system is compatible before we install. Some heat pumps and dual-fuel systems need specific thermostat models; we know which work and which don’t.
Maybe, maybe not. About half the time the thermostat is fine and the issue is at the air handler — blown 3-amp control board fuse, failed transformer, low-voltage short from a chewed wire (mice love thermostat wire), or a tripped float switch on a clogged drain. We test the system before we sell you a new thermostat. No point buying hardware that won’t fix the problem.
Sometimes — depends on how you use them. Honest take: if you’re already running a tight schedule with a programmable thermostat, a Nest or Ecobee might save 5–10% on bills. If you’ve been running 70°F all the time and never adjust, the savings can be 20%+. The bigger benefit is convenience — remote control, away mode, alerts when something’s wrong. We’ll give you all your options and let you pick what works for your comfort and budget.
Thermostat problems are some of the most frustrating HVAC issues — the system might be perfectly fine, you just can’t control it. We’ve diagnosed thousands of these in Charlottesville and we know the failure patterns. We’ll figure out what’s wrong, fix it right, and show you how to use whatever’s on the wall.
