Otter Guys Plumbing was great to work with. Communication was clear from the start. When Ty and Don arrived, they were kind and easy to interact with. They took the time to communicate clearly through every step: diagnosing the problem, explaining what was going on, what the potential issues were, and what needed to happen moving forward. They educated us about the situation instead of just telling us what to do. Pricing was communicated clearly the whole way through. We were given all the pricing options, what they suggested, and why. Everything felt transparent and straightforward, and we didn’t feel pressured to do more than was necessary. I would absolutely recommend them.
Why Central Virginia homeowners choose The Otter Guys for RO
65+ years installing drinking water systems in Central Virginia
Since 1960, we’ve installed point-of-use and whole-home RO systems across Charlottesville, Crozet, Keswick, and the surrounding counties — on both well water and city water. We know which configurations hold up and which ones clog fast.
Under-sink vs. whole-home RO — we show you both
An under-sink RO serves the kitchen tap and fridge — the right call if drinking water quality is your concern. A whole-home RO treats every tap but costs more and wastes more water. Most homes don’t need whole-home RO. We’ll tell you honestly which one fits your situation.
In-house installers, not subcontractors
The same crew that installs your system services it and honors the warranty. The tech who ties into your main line is the one you call if anything needs attention later — we don’t hand you off to a third-party installer and disappear.

Signs you need a reverse osmosis system
Buying Bottled Water Weekly
If you’re stacking cases of bottled water in the garage, an under-sink RO pays for itself in 12–24 months and eliminates the plastic.
Chlorine or Chemical Taste
Pool-like smell or chemical taste from the tap is municipal chlorine. RO’s carbon pre-filter removes it completely, and the RO membrane polishes everything else.
Concern About PFAS, Lead, or Heavy Metals
RO is the gold standard for removing dissolved contaminants — PFAS, lead, arsenic, nitrates, chromium — things carbon filters alone can’t touch.
Cloudy Ice, Spotty Glasses
Hazy ice cubes and water spots on clean glassware mean high dissolved solids (TDS). RO knocks TDS down to under 10 ppm — crystal-clear ice, spotless glassware.
Coffee or Tea Tastes Off
If your coffee never tastes as good as your favorite cafe’s, it’s the water. Baristas use RO for a reason — mineral-free water makes cleaner-tasting coffee and tea.
Pregnant, Elderly, or Immunocompromised Household
Extra peace of mind on drinking water matters more in high-risk households. RO is the most reliable point-of-use filtration available.

“Malak was very knowledgeable and repaired my water heater very quickly. He even gave me a free water evaluation. Yikes! I had no idea that much chlorine and bacteria were in my water. The Otter Guys are the best.”Denise Dezio Google Review
“Malec was our tech. He was very thorough in his investigation to our water heater problem and water quality check. He respected our home and gave advice on what to expect next. Otter Guys offered us 4 solutions and Malec talked us through where it would be best to start to solve our situation and not just put a bandaid on it. I would highly recommend Otter Guys for their techs professionalism and timely service.”Luke Davies Google Review
“Really really great service. I felt seen and like they were going to make sure I was fully taken care of. I had been told they were a great experience, and now have my own story to back it up.”Christy Scott Google Review
Here’s exactly what happens when you call
Free on-site water quality test
We test your water for TDS, chlorine, hardness, and pH on-site. If you’re on a well or have specific contaminant concerns (lead, PFAS, arsenic), we can also pull a sample for lab analysis. Takes 20–30 minutes.
We show you under-sink and whole-home options with written pricing
Most kitchens are a perfect fit for a 3–5 stage under-sink RO with a dedicated faucet and optional fridge line. Whole-home RO is a bigger commitment — we’ll be honest about whether you actually need it. Written estimate for each option before you decide.
Install in 2–4 hours — no kitchen tear-up
Under-sink RO installs in 2–4 hours. We mount the unit in the cabinet, install the dedicated faucet (you pick the finish), tap into the cold water line, and run a drain line. Walk-through at the end — filter replacement instructions included.
Want to Know What’s Actually in Your Drinking Water? We’ll Test — Free.
An RO system delivers bottled-water quality at your kitchen tap for pennies a gallon — but the right system depends on your water quality. Free on-site test in under 30 minutes. Written estimate before any install. No pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Installed cost depends on whether you want an under-sink system (just the kitchen) or whole-home RO (every tap), how many filtration stages, and whether you’re adding a fridge line or remineralization stage. After the free on-site water quality test, we give you a written estimate with 2–3 options so you see the full cost before you decide.
For most homes, an under-sink RO is the right answer. It treats your drinking, cooking, and ice-making water — which is 99% of where taste and contaminant worries come from. Whole-home RO treats every faucet, but it’s expensive, wastes more water, and usually overkill unless you have a very specific whole-home contaminant concern. We’ll tell you honestly which one fits your situation.
RO’s membrane removes dissolved contaminants — PFAS, lead, arsenic, nitrates, chromium, fluoride, sodium, and dissolved minerals (TDS). A standard carbon filter handles chlorine and taste/odor issues but can’t remove anything dissolved at the molecular level. For anyone worried about contaminants they can’t see or taste, RO is the gold standard.
Yes. We offer financing on RO installs (soft credit pull for pre-qualification; hard pull only at final approval). Most homeowners who finance land in the $40–$90/month range depending on the system. Your technician walks you through options during the water test visit.
Pre-filters (sediment and carbon): every 6–12 months. The RO membrane itself: every 2–4 years depending on your water quality. Post-filter: once a year. We offer annual service plans if you’d rather not think about it — we’ll come out, replace the filters, and sanitize the system.
RO does remove dissolved minerals along with the bad stuff. For most households this is a non-issue — you get the majority of your minerals from food, not water. If you’d prefer mineralized drinking water, we install systems with a remineralization post-stage that adds calcium and magnesium back in.
Whether it’s bottled-water fatigue, concerns about PFAS and lead, or just wanting cleaner coffee and ice — we’ve heard every reason homeowners install RO. Thousands of RO systems installed across Central Virginia. Start with the free water quality test, see your actual numbers, and go from there.
